RevUp Capsules Associate Program gains momentum
December, 2011
RevUp Capsules has announced an Associate program introducing the opportunity for people to benefit from introducing RevUp Capsules to their social networks. The program is gaining momentum as current customers and friends of RevUp Capsules learn about the promotional prices at which they can buy RevUp Capsules, and the referral fees that the company is prepared to pay.
In what is quite a unique program, RevUp Capsules has devised a simple but effective program that provides Associates with their very own online store for the energy boosting supplement that is gaining new customers daily. Each associate has the opportunity to personalize their webpage, at no cost to themselves, with their picture and a testimonial or message to their prospective customers. Then by simply letting their friends and family know about RevUp Capsules and providing a link to their webpage, they will be in the running to earn referral fees for sales made from their link. "Why should Facebook and Google be the only ones to profit from our personal contacts?" asks RevUp Capsules VP Craig Field, "Our social networks are our property, so let's make them work for us. If you believe in the product enough to buy it for yourself, let your friends share in the benefit".
In time, RevUp Capsules hopes to add more products to its stores and in so doing, provide an ever increasing array of opportunities for Associates to benefit from. Another consideration is to provide a multi-level referral fee structure. In the meantime, RevUp Capsules provides an innovative way for people to earn a little extra income and benefit from what could become the next wave in social marketing.

Keep Your Head Up and Outlook Positive
October, 2011
I set out on a 20 mile training run today. In order to meet the rest of the day's scheduled activities we had to set off at 5:30am; we run at about 11 to 12 minutes a mile, so were in for about 4 hours on the road. We chose a 2 lap course, so Trish could run the first 10 with me and then get her bike and second me around the last 10. Our route wound its way through some of the very attractive suburbs here in South Charlotte, as well as along the popular running sidewalks on the 51.
Of course it was still quite dark when we set out, but we chatted as we ran and felt good to be out. But, as the second lap came around and I was now running on my own, I found myself focusing on several aches and pains I had not noticed before. The sun had started to break through and the pretty gardens were now visible, but I could not really see them and felt my peak cap was like a pair of blinds that a horse wears to avoid it being distracted by things in it's periphery vision. I was barely 12 miles down and feeling terrible.
Then at the top of a particularly tough hill, almost forcing myself to do it, I ripped off the peak cap and looked up. The sky was a beautiful blue, the trees all shades of green, yellow, orange and brown, the birds were chirping and the air on my head was fresh and invigorating. My mind opened up to all that was around me, I felt blessed to be able to run through this wonderful neighborhood, and realized that I was good for another 8 miles. The aches and pains were still there, but far away and hardly noticeable. I had a smile on my face and by the time Trish had caught up on the bike I was happy, joking and loving the run again.
I'm no doctor or anything, but I've done a bit of running in my time and can say with 110% conviction that running, as in life, is all in the mind. I don't know if there is a chemical reaction that takes place that flows from the brain to the muscles, or if it's endorphins, or something else, but I do know my running improved, I made the distance, and am now sitting here writing about it. So keep your head up and have a positive attitude on things no matter how you may be feeling at the time. Even if it means telling yourself that things are great, that you are lucky to be where you are. Do it and you will start to build the attitude to build on it some more, keep re-enforcing the positive and avoid negative affirmations (e.g. don't say things like "this could be a lot worse", rather say "this is great, and is only getting better"). No matter what's going on in your world, you have the ability and power to do something positive about it.
What is Inositol?
October, 2011
© Elson M. Haas MD
(Excerpted from Staying Healthy with Nutrition)
Inositol, also part of the B vitamin complex, is closely associated with choline. Like choline, inositol (as phosphatidylinositol) is also found in lecithin, though in lesser amounts than choline, and acts as a lipotropic agent (milder than choline) in the body, helping to emulsify fats. The body can produce its own inositol from glucose, so it is not really essential. We have high stores of inositol; its concentration in the body is second highest of the B vitamins, surpassed only by niacin.
Sources: Inositol is present in both plants and animals. It is part of phospholipids in animals; in plants, it is contained in phytic acid, which can bind calcium and iron. It is not totally clear how inositol is produced by the body; it may be made by intestinal bacteria. It is stored in the body, but drinking lots of coffee can deplete these stores. Inositol is found in the whole, unprocessed grains, citrus fruits (except lemons), cantaloupe, brewer's yeast, unrefined molasses, and liver. It is also available in wheat germ, lima beans, raisins, peanuts, cabbage, and some nuts. And, of course, lecithin is a good source.
Functions: Inositol, as phosphatidylinositol, has its primary function in cell membrane structure and integrity. Other functions of phosphatidylinositol are somewhat obscure. With choline, it may help in brain cell nutrition. Inositol is especially important for the cells of the bone marrow, eye tissue, and intestines. And it may also have something to do with hair growth.
Uses: Although inositol has been used to treat and prevent progression of athero-sclerosis throughout the body and to help reduce cholesterol, there is no good evidence from human studies that inositol lowers cholesterol and protects against cardiovascular disease. As a mild lipotropic agent, though, it is commonly used by overweight people to help with weight loss, and it may help in redistributing body fat. Exercise helps, too, of course.
Inositol helps promote healthy hair and skin. It has been used to treat eczema, and it may help the hair, especially if there is an inositol deficiency. For sleep, 500 mg. of inositol before bed has a mild antianxiety effect (placebo?) as well as possibly helping to utilize fat and cholesterol during sleep.
Inositol has also had some success therapeutically in improving the nerve function in diabetic patients with pain and numbness due to nerve degeneration. Generally, diabetic people should take extra inositol. People with multiple sclerosis may also receive some benefit with inositol supplementation, as there seems to be a higher percentage of inositol deficiency in nerve cell membranes in those patients.
Deficiency and toxicity: There is no known toxicity with inositol even in amounts of 50 grams, which are much higher than normal uses. Deficiencies are also uncommon, since inositol is so available in foods and the body also makes it. Caffeine, however, can produce an inositol deficiency. Some problems that have been associated with low levels of inositol in the body are eczema, constipation, eye problems, hair loss, and elevations of cholesterol. There may also be a greater propensity for fatty plaques to form in the heart and arteries and more likelihood for cardiovascular disease.
Requirements: There is no specific RDA for inositol, since it can be made in our bodies. We usually obtain it readily from food in an amount of about 1 gram daily. A therapeutic dosage is usually about 500 mg.; however, it should be taken with choline and other B vitamins and mainly as lecithin, which contains the natural balance of phospholipids. I do not recommend taking separate inositol capsules. Needs are increased with regular coffee consumption of more than two cups daily. Soy lecithin contains about 40 mg. of phosphatidylinositol per capsule.

Health Benefits of Taurine
October, 2011
Taurine is an amino acid essential to the proper functioning of the heart and the eyes. It is found in many animals, especially sea animals, mainly shellfish. The following article by Junji Takano discusses this interesting protein found in energy drinks and supplements.
I have mentioned about long life of Masai people in the previous article "Discover the Wonders of the Masai's Culture Ethnicity and Health", and my understanding was that they do not take any salt but a lot of yogurt-like or cow milk which is somewhat fermented.
Here, I do not deny that I received a lot of comments as well as antagonized e-mails regarding the long life of Masai people.
To clear that, I have also studied about short life span of people, specifically the Tibetans.
In Tibet, average lives of people are too short. Some Tibetan tribes die at a young age (about 35 45 years old) because of heart attack or heart failure. We understand that their main food is only oats powder with salt. It is just because they take too much brown rock salt or halite. They need more animal protein to neutralize their food nutrition. Their lack of protein is caused by not eating bird meat, cow meat, and fish meat because of their religion, culture, and funeral traditions.
We requested several tribes for medical examination, and we discovered something about their blood pressure. Their average blood pressure was 165/135 mmHg. The main reason of their short life is lack of animal protein which contain important mineral called "Taurine". They live at high mountains in remote regions in China. We requested 30 selected tribe people to take taurine powder for 60 days with complete medical checkup. Amazingly, their blood pressure became normal at 130/90 mmHg. For sure, these volunteers will not suffer from heart failure before the age of 45 years old, if they will take care of their health as we instructed.
WHAT IS TAURINE?
Taurine is a sulfur amino acid essential to the proper functioning of the heart and the eyes. It is found in many animals, especially sea animals, mainly shellfish.
PHYSIOLOGICAL ROLES OF TAURINE
-
It acts as an antioxidant, and helps prevent macular degeneration and other serious eye diseases.
-
It reduces blood pressure and cholesterol level, thus, helps prevent arteriosclerosis.
-
It improves detoxification function of the liver.
-
It helps to strengthen the heart muscle, thus, stabilizing the function of the heart.
-
It lessens the accumulation of lactic acid which becomes the cause of fatigue.
-
It immediately restores and protects corneal cells from harmful ultraviolet rays and alike.
One good thing about taurine is that it will not break by heating. However, because it dissolves easily in water, you should not throw the broth when cooking. Take the broth for your diet.
THERAPEUTIC APPLICATIONS OF TAURINE
Taurine might be useful in treating conditions such as: arteriosclerosis, hypertension, heart failure, hair problems such as thin hair and baldness, arrhythmia, hypercholesterolemia, and liver disease.
FOODS CONTAINING TAURINE
Taurine is found in eggs, fish, meat, and milk. Taurine is also found in some plant foods like seaweeds, but present in very low levels. It is highly present in sea foods such as clam, squid, octopus, and oyster.

Running On Empty

Running on Empty
Boost your speed and endurance by skipping carbs -- seriously
By Kelly Bastone
As featured in the May 2010 issue of Running Times Magazine
Everyone knows carbohydrates deliver the juice runners need to power through workouts and races. But emerging research suggests that, at least for marathoners, runners' dependency on carbs is a habit worth kicking: Break the carb addiction, and you might run faster, farther.
It sounds counterintuitive. Yet many East African runners -- including Meb Keflezighi, the Eritrean-born American who won the 2009 New York City Marathon -- forgo carbs before and during their training runs. Keflezighi says the strategy helped him blow past Robert Cheruiyot at the end of the race, clinching his historic win.
That's because denying the body carbohydrates during training runs teaches it to burn fat instead, which spares muscle glycogen stores. "A key part of success in the marathon is to conserve as much energy as possible for the last half of the race," Keflezighi says. "If I can conserve my carbohydrate stores, then when it comes to the end of the race and I have to pull away from a strong runner like Robert, then I have the energy reserved to do it."
Several recent studies bear this out. At the Centre of Inflammation and Metabolism in Denmark, Bente Klarlund Pedersen, M.D., DMSc, had subjects exercise one leg once daily, and the other leg twice every other day, but in a glycogen-depleted state. The total amount of training was equal for both legs, but after 10 weeks, the glycogen-denied leg increased its endurance by 90 percent.
Keith Baar, Ph.D., has also studied low-glycogen training at Scotland's University of Dundee, and published his findings in the European Journal of Sport Science. "When muscles don't have carbs to burn, they take fuel from other sources, like fatty acids," he explains. And burning those fatty acids starts a chain of reactions that breaks down fat and creates more mitochondria -- the powerhouses of the cell, responsible for making the body's fuel. High-intensity workouts performed in a glycogen-depleted state may deliver even more benefit, says Baar, since that strategy stimulates mitochondria numbers in fast-twitch muscle fibers.
Yet low-carb training is not for sprinters, since high-speed running demands carbohydrate -- not fat -- as fuel. "It's the distance runners who benefit," says Baar, who notes that the low-carb approach has proven effective for three-time Ironman world champion Chrissie Wellington. She does selected long training sessions -- on average one every two weeks -- with minimal carb intake
The running-on-empty strategy has certainly worked for Keflezighi. Day-to-day, he eats a high-carb diet that includes kitcha and himbasha (traditional Eritrean breads). "But he doesn't use carbs when he's actually running, and that's improved his endurance at speeds that are critical for the marathon," says Krista Austin, Ph.D., CSCS, Keflezighi's nutrition consultant. She says runners often hit the Wall because they're not used to using fat as a fuel source. But by weaning themselves off carbs during training, they discover they can tap into more muscle glycogen when they need it over the last third of a marathon.
Go Low, Go Long
Low-carb training programs vary. Some experts, such as Baar, recommend that athletes complete two of their weekly steady-state training sessions in a glycogen-depleted condition. So if you're doing just one training session per day, you could schedule it for first thing in the morning, before breakfast. Runners doing doubles might run for an hour at 75 percent effort, skip recovery eating, then do another hour-long run plus intervals (such as 6 x 800m with 1.5 minutes of recovery in between). Either way, runners should take just water -- not carbs -- during their run, unless they're going 20 miles or more -- and even then, Baar says, they should merely sip an energy drink.
"You should expect to run a slower time when you're low on carbs," Baar says. "But in training, you're not after a perfect performance -- you're building long-term benefits you'll reap on race day, which could be weeks or months away." Some experimental studies have seen improvement in athletes' fat-burning abilities in as little as three weeks, but Baar says six to eight weeks is more realistic, since such workouts are too stressful to do all the time. Plus, the approach is best avoided when runners fear a cold, because exercising in a carb-depleted state suppresses the immune system.
That's why Austin advises against glycogen-depleted workouts, preferring athletes simply pass on carbs during their daily training runs. "Meb's not running on low glycogen stores," she explains. "The stores are there, but he's training his body not to use them."
To get the most out of the workout, runners must be able to hold onto pace (bonking at mile 20 isn't ideal). So Austin suggests that runners taper their carb consumption, starting with 10 to 15 grams of carbohydrate every 15 minutes and backing down by a few grams each week till they hit zero. And don't skimp on recovery, she cautions. "The key is to refuel and stay well-fueled with a balance of carbs, fat and protein," Austin explains.
And on race day, forget about going low-carb. Keflezighi, for example, was still downing sport drink 25 miles into his New York City win. "Racing, you want your glycogen to be high," Baar says, because that -- along with the fat you've trained your body to burn -- delivers a winning combination of long-haul endurance and bursts of strength.
3 Strategies for Low-Carb Work
1) Skip the gels. Do your long runs (up to 20 miles) without ingesting carbs. Drink only water, or, if hyponatr emia is an issue due to large volumes of water, a low- or no-carb electrolyte replacement drink.
2) Wait to break your fast. Schedule two workouts per week before breakfast to be in a glycogen-depleted condition.
3) Do a depleted double. Exercise at 70-75 percent of maximum for 30 minutes to one hour without carbohydrate supplementation. Don't refuel primarily with carbs. Later in the day, do a second workout for one to three hours and include high-intensity work such as intervals.
RevUp Capsules helped me on my run today
October, 2011
Trish and I ran 15 miles this morning, and I have to say that mentally we were so there all the way thanks to RevUp Energy Boost Capsules. We took 2 RevUp Capsules about 30 minutes before the run, and then another dose 2 hours into the run, when we stopped for a water and a Coke at a Gas station. We both just felt so motivated and pumped up at the end, even though the body was sore. This means I have done 46 miles this week; all part of my training for the ThunderRoad Marathon in November in Charlotte. I just cannot imagine how I would get the energy to do all the training that is required for a Marathon, and still work full time, without RevUp Capsules.
I take 2 RevUp Capsules every morning that I run, which is most mornings, and it definately clears my head and gets me out there. I mean it's often cold, dark and the legs are usually stiff from the previous days' running, so I need a little boost; I have yet to regret a run I have done (on the other hand, I've regretted many runs I have not got out and done). Plus I am convinced that taking RevUp Capsules before and during the run helps not only with burning fats, but also with the mental side so I do not feel as tired and can go on for longer.
RevUp Capsules do not replace the need for proper training. Things like building up to the distance slowly and consistently, and eating and drinking right. But studies have shown that caffiene, a key ingredient in RevUp Capsules, helps to mobilize fat reserves - which means they are more accessible as an energy source - and helps with the perception of effort. This clearly is why we felt so good this morning after running 15 miles.
RevUp Capsules also contains Vitamin B's, so in terms of health, I have found that I am healthier than ever, even with the demands of work and the self imposed stress of running over 30 miles a week.
We keep a regular supply of RevUp Capsules at home now. It's really inexpensive if you buy the 18 pack online, and we find our son uses it to help with his studies at school. It is not a replacement for a daily multi-vitamin, but there is no doubt that RevUp Capsules provides that extra boost to enjoy life to the max.

Does coffee chase away the blues for women?
September, 2011
Study finds less depression among caffeine consumers.
WASHINGTON Compared with uncaffeinated women, those who drank the equivalent of four or more cups of coffee a day are more likely to drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes and less likely to volunteer their time in church or community groups. But a new study finds that well-caffeinated women have a key health advantage over their more abstemious sisters: They're less likely to become depressed.
In the back-and-forth world of research on caffeine's effects, the latest study suggests that women who get several jolts of java a day may do more than get a quick boost: Their mental health may see sustained improvement even as the physical stresses of aging accumulate. Among a large population of women tracked for as long as 18 years each, the women who routinely consumed the highest levels of caffeine were 20 percent less likely than those who drank little to none to become depressed when they were nearing or in their 60s.
Coffee, which ounce-for-ounce delivers the strongest dose of caffeine, was most women's pick-me-up of choice. And generally, the more caffeine a woman drank, the more likely she was to be in good mental health. The study was published Monday in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
"A small amount of coffee may keep you more active and more happy, and that may result in the long run in better brain health," said Dr. Alberto Ascherio of Harvard University, the senior author of the study. Cautioning that his group's findings are preliminary, Ascherio added that they should ease concerns among female coffee addicts as they enter midlife; the average age of the participants was 63 years in 1996, when researchers began tracking the incidence of depression among the women.
To gauge the link between caffeine consumption and depression, the authors drew upon the long-running Nurse's Health Study. The 53,739 women who participated in that larger study completed periodic surveys of eating habits for 14 years.

All ingredients are naturally occurring and it contains no calories or sugars and so is suitable for diabetics (following consultation with their doctor).
RevUp Energy Boost Capsules® offer convenience and are just as effective as the leading energy shots and drinks. RevUp takes up less space in retail stores, is inexpensive to ship and so is highly competitive. One pack of RevUp contains 6 soft-gel capsules which will provide up to 15 hours of fast-acting energy. This is equivalent to three 2 oz energy shot bottles. The total cost of one RevUp packet is $3.99 as opposed to $7.47 for the equivalent hours from energy shots.
Why an energy boost capsule? Energy drinks and shots have been highly successful retail products because they have the right formulation and are effective. RevUp has a similar formulation that provides the same desired effect, in just two capsules.
Soft-gel capsules are the most up-to-date method of supplement delivery (being used by major pharmaceutical companies such as Johnson & Johnson) because they are easy to swallow, break down quicker in the stomach and allow the contents to be absorbed faster. The use of soft-gel capsules is the key to the convenience and value of RevUp Energy Boost Capsules®.
Trish Field, Chief Operating Officer of Upfront Marketing, Inc., the manufacturers of RevUp says, "We believe that capsules are the next wave in the energy boost market."
"Compared to the liquid alternatives, the sheer size and practicality of RevUp makes it far easier to take in order to get the desired effect, rather than having to drink other products with a lot of superfluous ingredients," she said.
She added, "There are other non-liquid energy supplements, but none in a soft-gel capsule form and none that work as well as RevUp, due to their ineffective formulations. Some products are almost pure caffeine that give you the jitters when you take them and a major crash when they wear off. Then there are herbal supplements that are just not that effective and often require you to chew or drink them, resulting in further bad taste and consistency issues."
RevUp Energy Boost Capsules® is currently available in North Carolina grocery stores like Harris Teeter, and convenience stores like Circle K and Sam's Mart. It is widely available in South Carolina stores such as Hotspots, Bountyland, The Loopmart, Pop Stores and others and is available at Road Rangers Truck Stops in Wisconsin. RevUp was also recently listed with Dearborn Wholesalers in Chicago IL.
